Therapeutic Chair Yoga for School Teachers
Teachers are the guiding light in every child’s journey — nurturing, shaping, and inspiring students from their early years through adolescence.
In this noble role, teachers dedicate countless hours not only to teaching but also to mentoring, guiding, and managing responsibilities both at school and at home. In giving so much to others, it’s easy to forget to pause — to breathe, stretch, and care for oneself.
In my earlier corporate career, I used to conduct training sessions for clients whenever we implemented a new software product. Each training would run for a full week — from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — with just two short breaks and a lunch interval. After standing and speaking for nearly six hours a day, I often felt completely exhausted by the end of the session. That experience gave me a deep appreciation for what teachers do every single day — teaching, guiding, standing, talking, managing classes, and balancing along with home responsibilities.
It truly is a lot. And that is why I feel inspired to serve and support teachers through short, practical yoga therapy sessions that bring back energy, calm, and inner balance.
With this thought in mind, I have designed a 30-minute Therapeutic Chair Yoga session exclusively for school teachers. This gentle practice can be done right on a chair, making it accessible even amidst a busy schedule.
Through gentle movements, mindful breathing, and simple chanting, this session helps teachers to:
Stretch and refresh the body
Release physical and mental tension (then and there, instead of letting it accumulate)
Relax deeply and restore calm
Rejuvenate energy and focus
Regain balance at the body, breath, and mind levels
The sessions are guided by me, with small variations introduced over 5 classes, allowing participants to become familiar with the movements and breathwork. Once learned, this simple practice can be completed in less than 20 minutes a day.
Regular, enthusiastic practice brings visible benefits — improved posture, reduced fatigue, calm breathing, and a serene state of mind that naturally carries into teaching and daily life.
Last month, a Therapeutic Chair Yoga program was conducted at a school in Chennai. It was held over one week, with each session lasting 30 minutes — and it was warmly received by the teachers. By the 4th and 5th session, many participants shared that they could feel the difference — experiencing greater relaxation, lightness, ease and renewed energy.
To help them continue the practice at their own pace, I also shared a video recording of the session, along with illustrated drawings of the postures, breathing techniques, and chants. This visual and auditory support enables teachers to easily integrate the short sequence into their daily routine — even during short breaks at school. The sample practice sheet is shown below.
